HEADACHES SINCE STARTING HRT
Headaches since starting HRT. Normal?
It's worrying when your head hurts after a new start. The NHS lists headaches as a known side effect.
WHAT THE NHS LISTS
Headaches show up on both lists
- The NHS names headaches as an estrogen side effect
- It names them as a progestogen side effect too
- Combined HRT can bring some from either list
HOW COMMON IS IT
Often none, or only mild ones
The NHS says plenty of people notice no side effects, or just mild ones. So a headache is possible, but it is not a given.
IS IT THE HRT?
It might not be the HRT
The NHS points out that HRT side effects can look like menopause symptoms. That means HRT may not be the cause.
GIVING IT TIME
A few weeks
The NHS says side effects usually improve over time and often go away after a few weeks.
WHEN TO GET IT CHECKED
When to talk to a doctor
- The NHS says to speak to a GP if side effects are severe
- Or if they carry on past 3 months
- A GP may review the dose, type or way you take it

Questions for your doctor
- Could these headaches be from HRT or from menopause itself?
- How long should I give this before we review it?
- Which options are there if headaches continue?
