SORE BREASTS AFTER STARTING HRT
Tender breasts since starting HRT?
The NHS lists it as a possible side effect, and says these often go away after a few weeks.
What the NHS says
It's a listed side effect
The NHS lists breast pain or tenderness as a possible side effect. It also says many people get no side effects, or only mild ones.
Which hormone is behind it?
It's listed for both hormones
- The NHS names breast pain or tenderness for estrogen
- It also appears for progestogen
- With combined HRT, the NHS says you may get some of the effects linked to estrogen or to progestogen
How long it may last
A few weeks
The NHS says estrogen side effects will often go away after a few weeks. Progestogen ones will usually go away after a few weeks too.
Is it even the HRT?
Menopause can feel similar
The NHS points out that HRT side effects can be similar to menopause symptoms. So the soreness may not be coming from the HRT at all.
When to get it checked
The NHS gives two flags
- Side effects that feel severe
- Side effects that go on past 3 months
- The NHS says to speak to a GP (a doctor) in either case

Questions for your doctor
- Could this tenderness be from HRT or from menopause?
- How long is it reasonable to wait before we review it?
- If it lingers, what options does a doctor see?
